Questions about AI and mental health, answered honestly
People ask me about AI and mental health all the time. Can an app really help? Is it private? Can it stand in for a therapist? These are 40 of the questions that come up most, with my plain answers and links to the research behind them. Where an app can't help, I say so.

Does it actually help?
- Can an AI mental health app actually help me feel better?
Often, yes, in the moment.
- Does AI journaling actually improve mental health?
It can.
- Can AI journaling reduce stress and anxiety?
It can help.
- Does an AI app work better than traditional therapy?
No.
- How long does it take to feel better using an AI mental health app?
In the moment, sometimes minutes: one honest conversation or a slow breathing practice can settle you.
- What are the biggest benefits of AI mental health apps?
The biggest benefits are being there at any hour, a place to talk without judgment, low cost, a safe way to practise hard conversations, and guided structure when your mind is racing.
- Does everyone find AI mental health apps helpful?
No.
Can an AI understand me?
- Will an AI know what I'm going through?
Not the way a person who loves you does.
- Can an AI understand my specific mental health condition?
It can know general information about conditions, but it can't assess or diagnose you, and you shouldn't let it try.
- How accurate is AI at understanding my emotional state?
Better at reading words than reading people.
- How does AI mood tracking actually work?
It works in one of two ways: you rate your mood and the app charts it, or the app estimates your mood from what you write or say.
- How does an AI generate insights from my moods?
It looks for patterns over time, such as which days you seem lower or what comes up alongside better days.
- Can an AI app track my mental health progress?
It can give you a rough picture of how things are shifting, but time spent in an app isn't progress.
- Will an AI app judge me for what I share?
No.
AI, therapy and the people in your life
- Is it weird to journal with an AI instead of a therapist?
No, it isn't weird.
- What's the difference between a mental health app and AI therapy?
Therapy is a regulated relationship with a trained, accountable professional.
- Can I use an AI app instead of seeing a therapist?
For everyday stress, loneliness and hard days, an app can be real support.
- Why would I use an AI app for depression when I could text a friend?
If you can text a friend, do.
- Can an AI mental health app replace my medication?
No.
- How is using AI for mental health different from self-help?
Self-help speaks to everyone at once.
- Should I tell my doctor I'm using an AI mental health app?
Yes.
Safety and privacy
- How private is my data in an AI mental health app?
It depends on the app, so read the privacy policy first.
- Can an AI detect when I'm having a mental health crisis?
Don't rely on it.
- Is it safe to rely on AI for mental health support?
It's safe to lean on, not to rely on alone.
- How do I know if an AI mental health app is legit?
Check who built it, whether it makes medical claims it can't back up, whether the privacy policy is clear about storage and deletion, whether it gives crisis numbers and admits its limits, and whether it's designed to hook you or to help you need it less.
- What happens to my data when I stop using an AI mental health app?
With many apps, your data stays on a server until you delete it.
Choosing an app and what it costs
- Which AI mental health app should I try first?
Start with what you need, then try one with a free tier for a week.
- How much does an AI mental health app cost?
Prices vary widely, and many apps have a free tier.
- What should I look for in a mental health AI app?
Look for honesty about being AI, crisis numbers that are easy to find, a clear privacy policy with easy deletion, a tone that listens before it advises, no guilt-driven streaks, encouragement of your real relationships, and real practices like breathing and grounding.
- Is an AI mental health app worth trying if I'm on a tight budget?
Yes.
Using it well
- What questions should I ask my AI mental health assistant?
You don't need the right question; "I don't know why I feel like this" is a fine start.
- How often should I use my AI mental health app?
As often as it helps, and no more.
- What are people actually using AI mental health apps for?
Mostly ordinary things: venting after a long day, getting through sleepless nights, calming down before an exam or a shift, untangling a looping worry, rehearsing a hard conversation, and feeling less alone far from family.
- What's the best time to journal with an AI app?
Whenever the feeling is there.
- How do I get started with an AI journaling app?
Read the privacy policy, start with something small and true about your day, try one guided practice, note one small step for tomorrow, and after a week ask yourself honestly whether it's helping.
- Is AI mental health support available 24/7?
Yes, and that's one of its real strengths: an app is there at 2am and on holidays.
Anxiety, ADHD, sleep and work
- Is an AI mental health app right for my anxiety?
It can help with everyday anxiety, like racing thoughts before an exam or a 2am spiral, through talking it through, slow breathing and grounding.
- Does AI mindfulness actually work for ADHD?
No app should claim to treat ADHD; it's best assessed and supported by a professional.
- Can an AI app help me sleep better?
It can help you wind down.
- Can an AI app help with stress management at work?
Yes, in small ways: a two-minute breathing break, venting before you get home, rehearsing a talk with your manager.
